It islikely thatfuture operating information retrieval systems maybebasedonautomatic information analysis methods instead ofmanualindexing, andonsearch procedures whichallow theusertointeract withthesystem during thesearch process. The effectiveness oftherequired analysis andsearch operations de- pends tosomeextent ontheavailability, inmachine-readable form, ofstandardized information concerning themake-up andcontent of eachstored document. Anauthor-prepared standard manuscript documentation unit, fur- nished witheachmanuscript, andillustrated inFig. 3ofthetext, maysimplify theinfonnation retrieval anddissemination operations andimprove their effectiveness. Thedesign ofsuchadocumentation unitiscovered anditsuseforindexing, classification, vocabulary normalization, searching, andretrieval isexplained.
