Design principles for technology-based statistics education

Abstract. Statistics is widely recognized as a discipline well-suited to technology-based education. Despite the appearance of a number of innovative contributions to computer-based statistics teaching, there have been few clear statements of appropriate design principles.  This article begins the process of codifying consistent principles for the design of computer-based materials for teaching statistics. The principles emerged as part of an ongoing effort to develop multimedia-based statistics materials for the ActivStats project. We draw from that project to illustrate the principles with specific examples.
