2.4-Gbit/s compact optical receiver module with one-chip 3R IC

Future multimedia communications demand large capacity optical transmissions in Gbit/s range, even in access networks, such as local area networks, interconnections, and subscriber systems. An optical receiver module in such applications is required to be small, low power, and low cost. We have fabricated an optical receiver in a miniature flat package for 2.4 Gbit/s operation. For realizing a compact and easy assembling optical receiver, a one-chip receiver IC including a PLL (phase-locked loop)-type clock extraction circuit, a multimode waveguide-type pin-PD, and TAB (tape automated bonding) technique were newly developed. This paper describes design and characteristics of this 2.4-Gbit/s optical receiver.
