GaAs lasers—A family of laser structures emerging for new applications

Abstract Two new laser structures have been developed from the long life 20 μm oxide insulated stripe geometry GaAs/(GaA1)As c.w. injection laser. They are referred to as the double stripe and the narrow stripe laser. The double stripe laser is most suitable for use in long haul digital optical communication systems. The narrow stripe laser with its improved linearity of transfer characteristic and high zero order mode output power is suitable not only for the more demanding analogue optical communication links, but also for use in many new commercial, industrial and military applications.
