Flow Forecasting for the River Meuse

A flood forecasting model of the river Meuse in the Netherlands is presented. As its catchment is situated in five countries a variety of problems with respect to international river management were encountered; this paper shows which and how they were solved. For an adequate way of modelling the forecasting model was subdivided in several modules, each of which is tailored to the specific circumstances of the considered part of the catchment and the available data. The subdivision boundaries were found, not by coincidence, near frontiers. The relation between modelling and the real-time data transmission system is elucidated. Also the first experiences with the model in a real-time application are described.
