Effective Countermeasures to Improve Passenger Manners

This paper addresses the most effective means of annoying passenger abatement through passive techniques such as posters and announcements. Researchers paid attention to three key points in their analysis: quantitative and qualitative assessments of abuses of normative passenger manners, an effective methodology of countermeasures to promote an improvement in passenger manners, and a rubric of rail company standards for appropriate reflection in policy. Annoying passenger behaviors are distinguished in this study into four modalities. The first of these, hazards, are people or objects that have the latent possibility of causing annoyance in other passengers. The second is that of individual factors, which include demographics and norm awareness acknowledgement. Third are environmental factors and, lastly, social environmental factors. Researchers concluded that passengers, in general, approved of strict enforcement of exceptionally annoying behavior such as poor hygiene and criminality, and more passive techniques for less annoying behavior. In addition, researchers concluded that the most effective passive techniques were posters with statistical information and/or a surprise factor as well as broadcast announcements.
