This paper addresses the key concerns for the control of an Information Technology product as it is being developed and during its subsequent support once it has been created. It considers the problems that a designer faces during the creation period. It takes into account the difficulties of handling what can be a fast growing system which, is continually at the limit of management control. It examines the control problems, the tools and techniques which may be employed and the needs of those who have to live with the growing system, as well as those who help the system to grow. In doing so, many, if not all aspects of configuration management will be explained in a way to which hopefully, everyone can relate. In addition, the particular difficulties which computer systems developers have with controlling a complex, ever changing system that seems to have a life of its own, will be addressed. This will consider developing systems with project teams having personnel of mixed disciplines.
