Trends in control desk development for power plants

One of the objectives of this colloquium is to give examples of different types of "control centres" and to identify common themes in their design to offer an opportunity to learn from each other. This paper aims to contribute to this by presenting some of ABB's experiences in and findings for power plant control. This includes the identification of general trends and their effect on control room concepts as well as the observation of other areas, exemplified here by a brief comparison with aviation. The application of the resulting concepts to power plant control is illustrated by some case studies.
