Simulation of Flow, Structure and Particle Dynamics in Human Upper Respiratory System

in biomedical research community. This paper is an attempt to summarize and present an overview of several simulation studies in human respiratory system and more particularly upper airways (nasal, retropalatal and retroglossal regions of airway). A brief insight into anatomy of upper airway and aspects of reconstruction methodology of airway models is outlined. Dierent phenomena of ow in upper airways such as steady, unsteady ows, ow-structure,and owparticle interactions which were simulated by our group, are summarized and discussed with case studies. Also, the challenges, accuracy, limitations and future road map of numerical simulations in pulmonary mechanics is discussed.
