A conceptual framework for teaching technical writing using 3D virtual reality technology

This paper presents a conceptual framework for teaching technical writing using 3D virtual reality technology to simulate contextual learning environment for technical learners. The 3D virtual of a virtual environment of the offshore platform is proposed to provide the learners an opportunity to acquire effective communication skills in their target workplace community. The goal of this project is to propose a virtual environment with real-world dynamic contents to develop effective technical writing. The theories and approaches to teaching and learning underlying the conceptual framework of the virtual reality (VR) will be discussed. The architecture and the technical aspects of the offshore platform virtual environment will also be presented. These include choices of rendering techniques to integrate visual, auditory and haptics in the environment. The paper concludes with discussion on pedagogical implications.
