Multivariable Control of Warship Manoeuvring

Abstract The problem addressed is that of simultaneous control of the yaw, roll and speed motions of a modern warship whilst executing high speed manoeuvres. This paper describes the application of multivariable control techniques in the development of a pre–compensator to suppress the undesirable cross-coupling effects which are present in the manoeuvring dynamics of warships. Simulation results presented indicate that implementation of the pre–compensator would result in a significant improvement in the warship's operational effectiveness.
