Design, construction & performance analysis of a matrix converter

The Matrix Converter concept has the potential to offer a high performance variable speed drive within a compact physical size. In contrast to the Pulse Width Modulated drive, there is no requirement for a DC link or intermediate passive components. This paper describes the construction and performance of a prototype three-phase Matrix Converter using high-speed switching devices under microprocessor control. The design and programming of the 8051 micro-controller based control system is also described. Practical results are compared with a computer-based model developed in the Matlab Simulink environment. The paper also proposes solution for initial testing of a three-phase Matrix Converter using a simplified control system.
