The Past

The academic records are the important historical records of a student’s presence, performance, and accomplishments at the institution. From 1889 to 1958 the records were all processed with pen/ink or pencil and, later, with typewriter on either 4x6 cardstock or in a ledger. Data processing and punch cards moved us to the upgrade of the recording of grades on 8-1/2x11 cardstock – manually adhering a label with grades for each term to each student’s record. In 1976, UNC took a giant leap and developed a homegrown student information system (SIS) and the grades were stored on the system.
