A MAS-based protection coordination system for wide area network

Utilizing the MAS (multi-agent system) technique, which specializes in solving problems of complicated structure and distribution and taking into consideration the development reality of modern large-scale power grid, this paper proposes a MAS-based differential protection system for wide area power network. This system studies the structural components and communication ways of all protection agents from a macro perspective of the power grid as a whole, and realizes effectively the information exchange, coordination and cooperation of protection agents. At the same time, through a dynamic division of the main and backup current differential protection zones and by following certain protection rules, the flexibility of protection system and its adaptability to the changes in power network structure have been improved and the limitation that a traditional protection has to make decisions all by itself and lacks the ability in coordination has been overcome, thus enhancing the stability and reliability of running for large- scale power system.
