Laboratory investigation of engineering properties of rubberized asphalt mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement

An improved understanding of the rheological and engineering properties of a rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) pavement that contains reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is important to stimulating the use of these recycled and by-product materials in asphalt mixtures. The uses of RAP and rubberized asphalt in the past have proven to be economi- cal, environmentally sound, and effective in hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures across the US and the world. The objective of this research was to investigate the binder and mixture performance characteristics of these modified asphalt mixtures through a series of laboratory tests to evaluate properties such as the fatigue factor G*sind, rutting resistance, resilient modulus, and fatigue life. The results of the experiments indicated that the use of RAP and crumb rubber in HMA can ef- fectively improve the engineering properties of these mixes. Resume´ : Il est important de mieux comprendre les proprietes rheologiques et techniques d'une chausseee n beton bitumi- neux caoutchoute ´ (RAC) qui contient un revetement bitumineux recupere ´ (RAP) afin de simuler l'utilisation de ces mate ´- riaux recycles et de ces sous-produits dans les melanges bitumineux. Les utilisations du RAP et de l'asphalte caoutchoute ´ dans le passese sont montrees economiques, environnementales et efficaces dans les melanges bitumineux chauds (HMA) aux Etats-Unis et ailleurs dans le monde. L'objectif de la presente recherche etait d'etudier les caracteristiques du compor- tement du liant et du melange ce ces melanges bitumineux modifies par une serie d'essais en laboratoire, tels que G*sind, la resistance ala creation d'ornieres, le module de resilience et la duree de vie en fatigue. Les resultats des essais ont in- diqueque l'utilisation de RAP et de caoutchouc granulaire dans les melanges bitumineux chauds peut reellement ameliorer les proprietes techniques de ces melanges.
