Photoelectric and spectroscopic observations are reported for a sample of 56 degenerate-star candidates, 41 of which proved to be degenerate. The results indicate that UBV photometry of late-color-class proper-motion stars, even when obtained under nonphotometric observing conditions, can be useful in identifying suitable cool degenerate star candidates for spectroscopic study. Such photometric observation could therefore be pursued as backup programs by observers whose primary programs require ideal observing conditions. Spectrophotometry of two peculiar degenerate stars is presented. The magnetic white dwarf C35-26 may have weak He I 23P - 43D absorption as well as a probably variable absorption feature at 5050 A. The spectrum of G148-36 is difficult to attribute to the postulated white dwarf-sdM close binary which best fits the star's unusual broad-band colors.
