Basic blocks in unconstrained crossword puzzles

The concept of basic blocks, a common feature of rmconsrrairted crossword puzzle solutions, is introduced and defined. An efficient algorithm for the poduction of basic blccks is described and an implementation detailed. The construction of basic blocks is the only component part of the Crozzle, a complex unconstrained crossword varianb that has so far successfully yielded to automation. In the current absence of a successful solution generator to the popular Crozzle contest, basic blocks are one tool in the analysis and progress towards automated Crozzle solution generation.
