The deformation energy is one of the major factors for the conjecture of crash configuration in car accident reconstruction. The methodology for calculating a deformation energy during barrier impact is developed using force-deformation relationship. At first, linear equations for velocity-crush and force-crush relationship are derived to verify the effectiveness of finite element model. When compared with the test result, the approximation error is small. The deformation energy is calculated in two ways: One. integration of force-deformation curve up to residual crush: the other, consideration of dynamic crush and restitution effect. The computed energy shows reasonably good accuracy compared with the result evaluated by finite element analysis.
