Preliminary verification of spatial perception support using emphasized single-camera view

A spatial perception support using emphasized single-camera view and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which affects the body schema modification, was constructed in order to enhance the modification for adequate spatial perception around the remote robot. As a first step to evaluate it, spatial perception of an operator using a teleexistence robot (TER) against the emphasized single-camera view was investigated through a teleoperation experiment in this study. The spatial perception was investigated by analyzing distances measured by a laser range finder mounted on the TER. Investigating two cases for the image emphasized (IE) and for the image no emphasized (IN), significant differences in the minimum distance of median 50% (appropriate distance between the TER and the objects) were confirmed among IE and IN conditions (U = 5653830.5, p < .00, r = .0498, Wilcoxon rank sum test). Therefore, it was confirmed that the emphasized single-camera view was effective for the spatial perception support.
