An Integrated Design of Multi-Channel ECG Sensor on Smart Garment

In this paper, we present an integrated smart garment design of multi-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) sensing system with electronic textiles (E-textiles). A 5-lead ECG system is designed by the TI ADS12X analog digital converter (ADC) covering the channel I, II, III, and V2. The Nordic DA1458X microcontroller is selected for ECG data collection and wireless transmission. A novel structure of elastic E-textile wires is proposed with integration designs to minimize the stretching effect from the garment. Sponged E-textile electrodes are designed to replace the normal gel and dry electrodes for ECG measurements, which shows low impedance and good contacting stability. Furthermore, the electrode-skin contacting is enhanced with an optimized garment design with 3D clipping techniques. An evaluation is made between the proposed integration design and the ECG measuring system with AgCl gel electrodes, confirming the signal quality of our design under various body motions.
