Simulation and fault analysis of DC breaker in HVDC converter station

The metallic return transfer breaker (MRTB) is a key apparatus to break the DC current in 500 kV HVDC converter stations. It is usually used for monopole-ground operation mode/ bipolar operation model transferring. In this paper, an actual occurred fault of 500 kV HVDC breaker in HVDC converter station is presented in details. In order to analyze the complicated transient performance, a simulation with Mayr arc model is carried out in Matlab. The transient oscillation process of arc current, charging process after the arc, and the discharging process with current flowing through the arrester are analyzed, along with the on-site measurement current and field test of loop RLC parameter for verification and analysis. Finally, the actual failure processes of the proposed MRTB are analyzed in detail, which might be of some help for manufacture of 500 kV MRTB DC breaker in parameter design and give some suggestions to power company in grid operation and maintenance.
