Some problems of information processing and models of the visual pathway.

Abstract The manner in which sensory information is processed depends on the structure as well as on the dynamic characteristics of the sensory organ and the processing stations in the sensory pathway. Some problems of visual information processing, arising from our presently available data, are formulated. They fall into the areas of information input, information processing in the retina and beyond the retina. Models relating to these problems are discussed with a view to obtaining a unified picture of information transfer in the visual pathway. The models are concerned, in particular, with psychophysical observations bearing on the serial capacity and the statistics of the information input, the static and dynamic characteristics of retinal receptive fields and a suggested approach to information processing beyond the retina.
