Greenpeace

Greenpeace has sought to fulfill this mission through whistle-blowing, awareness raising, public education and political lobbying. However, Greenpeace is in many ways untypical of environmental groups. From its inception, it has been globally organised, unlike many big national non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as the UK’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or Green Alliance, Italy’s Legambiente, the USA’s Sierra Club or Germany’s Naturschutzbund Deutschland. It is also organised through a strong hierarchy, whereby professional activists do the campaigning and ordinary members raise funds, and top-down management of its campaigning strategies, unlike more locally orientated groups where members are involved directly in campaigning, such as Friends of the Earth. In this report I shall outline the development, organisation and campaigning activities of Greenpeace globally in order to illustrate these points.
