A Note on Fort Resolution Chipewyan

I spent approximately four hours working with Bernadette Unca, a Chipewyan from Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories, Canada. Her dialect, referred to as Resolution Chipewyan (RC), is in most respects the same as that reported by Li in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta (abbreviated CC).1 There are similarities to the Yellowknife Chipewyan dialect reported by Haas.2 All CC forms cited are from Li's 1933 article, unless otherwise noted. There is a general merger of t and k in RC. This is the same situation that Haas reported in Yellowknife Chipewyan. The words in table 1 occur with k, while they have t in the Fort Chipewyan dialect. Although t has generally merged with k, there are some cases where t remains. These are in very common words, and often derivationally related words have k. Thus, I found ta three, but kona thirty and kaSil thirteen; tu (varying with ku) water, but kuge lake, on the water; nit' go to sleep, but naske I dream.
