X-ray and gamma imaging with Medipix and Timepix detectors in medical research

Abstract The innovations brought by Medipix and Timepix detector readout chips have improved medical imaging. Firstly, the small pixel size enables a very high spatial resolution in imaging applications. For this reason, applications, which demand for a high spatial resolution like mammography or dental imaging, were improved both in contrast and spatial resolution. Secondly, the photon processing design of the Medipix and Timepix chips have made possible a completely new field of medical imaging: spectroscopic X-ray imaging. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Medipix2 Collaboration, this article is a review of selected topics related to the use of Medipix and Timepix detectors within the research and application fields of X-ray and gamma imaging in medicine.
