TheJohnsonantishear deviceandstandard shinpad intheisokinetic assessment oftheknee

Isokinetic training andassessment ofthekneejoint has beenthemainstay ofrehabilitation, especially inpatients withanterior cruciate ligament deficiency. Besides the original shinpadused, theantishear device wasintroducedbyJohnson in1982.Thisdevice hasbeenshown biomechanically toprevent excessive anterior translation offorce onthetibia during training. However, there isa needtocompare theantishear device andthestandard shinpadintheisokinetic assessment. Hence, themajor objective ofthis study istodefine, ifany, thedifference in patient assessment betweenthenewdoublepaddevice andtheoldsingle shinpad.Tensubjects withnoprevious history ofinjury oneither kneeweretested withtheCybex Isokinetic Dynamometer. Therewerefourmen andsix womenandthemeanagewas25.2years. Theywere randomized intodifferent testsequences withdifferent shinpadsatdifferent speeds. Correlation andpaired t tests (P)wereperformed tofindoutthecorrelation and difference between thetwodevices. There wassignificant difference inperformance assessment between thetwo devices inkneeextension (P 0.05). Therewasalsoa highcorrelation (r> 0.75) between thetwodevices. Itis concluded thatbecause ofthesignificant difference of datagenerated between thetwodevices, itisimportant to select onesingle device witheachpatient during aseries oftestings.
