A non-sequential contour detection with a priori knowledge

Abstract The minimum-radial-inertia method for extracting object contours is extended by taking into account a priori knowledge about the contour itself. The knowledge is assumed to be given in terms of a curve representing a typical shape (model) of the contour. The solution, obtained by minimizing the radial inertia as well as proper ‘distances’ from the model, shows an improved robustness with respect to the noise and extraneous structures.
