Statistical UWB range error model for the threshold leading edge detector

This paper explores the possibility of deducing the moments of the range error statistics of a threshold detector from known channel profiles. An analytical method for the calculation of the range error probability mass functions is presented, which takes into account the cumulating detection probability with increasing channel excess delay. This further allows the calculation of range error moments at various SNR levels. We discuss two approaches of characterizing the ranging behaviour of a given channel model. Results for the error variation among different realizations of the same model, as well as average accuracy for a single ranging transmission are presented. Such an analysis is performed on two sets of simulated UWB channels, representing residential LOS and NLOS transmitting conditions.
