APPLICATION OF NOVEL NUMERICAL DEFINITION-BASED SYSTEMATIC APPROACH (NDSA) TO THE DESIGN OF KNIFE FORMS

ABSTRACT In general, the form of a product has a significant effect on the emotional response it induces in potential consumers. The product form definition provides a convenient means of establishing a relationship between the consumers' perception of a product and its form features. Accordingly, this study proposes a novel design approach, designated as the Numerical Definition-based Systematic Approach (NDSA), in which an explicit numerical definition of the product form is constructed and used to establish the correlation between the product form features and the consumers' perception of the product image. The feasibility of the NDSA methodology is demonstrated using the example of a knife form for illustration purposes.
