Computed tomography in search of cancer of unknown origin.

The use of computed tomographic (CT) body scanning in search of an unknown primary site in metastatic malignant neoplasms in 98 patients is reviewed. A clinically occult tumor was identified in 31 cases. This detection rate is three to four times that of "conventional" radiographic studies. We suggest that CT scanning is a valuable addition to the workup in selected cases of metastatic cancer of unknown origin. ( JAMA 1982;248:340-343)
