A Granularity Based Analysis of Optical IP Packet Transport

We present analysis of different modes of packet transport and switch-ing, namely synchronous, asynchronous, fixed length, variable length, based on the granularities of the packet arrivals, packet lengths and the fiber delay line buffer. We argue that IP-centric or variable packet length mode is best suited mode for optical IP transport.
