Chapter 15 Pervasive public map displays

Abstract The combination of current computer interfaces and the Web has led to highly interactive and widely distributed map displays. While the computer has increased interaction with maps and the Web has increased their distribution, other types of computer interfaces with maps are possible. Large-screen, computer-driven displays are becoming increasingly common for a variety of applications. To make these displays interactive, new computer interfaces are required and strategies are needed for creating public web map displays that show such things as weather maps, and maps of automobile and flight traffic using large-screen technology. Hand-held Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) also represent a possible ubiquitous form of information display. Other possible user interfaces for public map displays may be envisioned based on research in the emerging fields of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence.
