Assessment of vernier motor design using generalised machine concepts

The vernier motor has been neglected because of its poor power factor and uncertainty in regard to design criteria. If this uncertainty were resolved then it would be possible to make more concrete comparisons between the vernier motor and other low speed drives. The machine appears at first sight to be difficult to analyse because its principle of operation resides in the variation of energy stored in the irregular air gap between two slotted structures. This paper shows how, with the correct approach, the analysis may be reduced and brought into line with the unified theory of machines.
