Analysis of the AC Voltage Distortion produced by Converter-Fed DC Drives

An iterative algorithm is presented for the analysis of the harmonic interaction between converter-fed dc drives and a relatively weak ac distribution system. The individual effect of each of the main parameters influencing the level of voltage distortion is assessed, with reference to a typical large dc drive. Special attention is given to the analysis of the current waveform during commutations, without the restrictions normally used in such analysis, i.e., constant dc current and undistorted ac supply voltages.
