Hydrogen production from 2-propanol as a key reaction for a chemical heat pump with reaction couple of 2-propanol dehydrogenation/acetone hydrogenation

Abstract Hydrogen production from 2-propanol under boiling and refluxing conditions (80°C) constitutes a chemical heat pump system, by coupling with the separation procedure of 2-propanol from acetone and hydrogen at ambient temperature and the exothermic reverse reaction at high temperature (200°C). Chemical conversion and storage of low-quality heat are advantageous for solar heat utilization. The role of catalysis for the endothermic 2-propanol dehydrogenation is especially important. The high activity of Ru and the low product retardation over Pt were noteworthy. A composite Ru-Pt catalyst and its surface modification with Pt(acac) 2 or Pd(acac) 2 exhibited activity enhancements.
