Mitigation of sub synchronous resonance using STATCOM controlled by PID and FL controllers

This paper deals with the use of fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and proportional integrator and derivative (PID) controller to control static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) which is used for damping oscillations caused by sub synchronous resonance (SSR). The results obtained by both the controllers are compared and it is found that FLC is better controller as compared to PID for controlling STATCOM to mitigate SSR. The study in this paper is particularly based on the torque amplification produced on the turbine generator shaft assembly after a fault takes place on a series-compensated power system. An IEEE benchmark model is used to study the mitigation of sub synchronous resonance (SSR) characteristics using both FL and PID controllers along with STATCOM in Matlab/Simulink.
