Generation of ultrashort pulses in lasers with external frequency modulation

It is shown theoretically that both asymmetric and symmetric ultrashort pulses of extremely short durations can be generated in solid-state lasers with external frequency modulation and self-phase-modulation of the field. It is pointed out that the frequency of external modulation can be anomalously low compared with the frequency corresponding to the intermode interval.
