Simulation of electromagnetic interference in integrated circuits using the SPICE circuit modelling package

Briefly reviews the previous work on the simulation of EMI effects in integrated circuits. Proceeds to consider what can be achieved with the SPICE package and the use of macro-models to enable systems of significant complexity to be simulated. Results are presented for some simple circuits which illustrate the use and limitations of SPICE in modelling EMI effects in integrated circuits. The possibilities for integration of circuit and electromagnetic analysis packages are then discussed. The paper shows that useful results can be achieved with current circuit simulation and macro-modelling techniques but that much work is still required to link electromagnetic and circuit simulations. The complexity of linking electromagnetic solvers to circuit analysis packages for susceptibility prediction is contrasted with simplifications which may be made in the prediction of emissions. The need for adequate data from manufacturers is also considered.
