Optimal design of involute profile helical gears

A method is presented for minimising the centre distance of a helical gear set of prescribed power capacity using a fixed ratio of facewidth to pcd and formulae contained within AGMA procedures. Although power capacity is dependent upon many factors, the method has used module, numbers of teeth, and helix angle as the significant variables. The procedure is based upon determining limiting values of AGMA geometry factors I and J which are derived in order to establish upper and lower boundaries for the search interval of centre distance.
