Fundamental Design of Tilting Pantograph

Because the reconstruction of railway for the cant compensation costs very high, the tilting system has been developed. The purpose of the tilting system is to compensate the centrifugal acceleration in order to reduce the lateral acceleration of the passenger at high speed on the curves. If the carbody is tilted to a suitable degree on the curves, the ride quality of passengers will be improved. KRRI(Korea Railway Research Institute) has been developing the EMU-type tilting train named the TTX(Tilting Train eXpress) in order to improve the train operational speed in the conventional lines. The pantograph of the tilting train is very important in order to supply the electrification equipments with power in safe. This paper describes the fundamental design of tilting pantograph which is appropriate for Korean TTX at maximum operational speed 180[km/h].
