Research Product Commercialization, the Dirts, and The Opportunities for Capitalizing Local Fundings

The current drive at mainstream universities all around the world is to be source of economic generator. There is a recent emphasis by the state administration that research products of faculties should be capitalized further in order to promote economic returns of state research funding. The exercise has a two-pronged aim in reducing universities researchers' dependence to state financial support by generating own income through new commercial product (which will also provide new source of income to the country) and to create a globally competitive university of excellence by showcasing university's quality products at the same time. After multiple experiences from different countries observed, with advantages and disadvantages explored, eventually, leading to the conclusion that there's no stopping commercialization work of research product. While there are lots of research products that could be worked upon locally at each individual university, in the spirit of cooperation between ASEAN universities through the AUN/SEED Network, local grants could be capitalized by all participating universities in the network in order to produce globally competitive products as well as to provide an avenue to enhance cross-collaboration further.
