Exploring the Linkage Between Strategic Groups and Competitive Strategy

Since Hunt1 coined the term, both the theoretical and the empirical literature have used the concept of "strategic groups" in various ways. Researchers in industrial-organization economics, strategic management, and marketing, among others, have all employed the concept. An extensive research review, by McGee and Thomas [1], is available. The present paper concentrates mainly on the linkage between strategic groups and competitive strategy, but also deals with other important relevant issues, focusing particularly on the theory of strategic groups, differences in intraindustry performance, and the dynamic behavior of firms and groups.
