Non line of sight boresight based on inertial measurement technology

Military aircraft and ground vehicles require precise angular alignment of on-board weapons and sensors in order to ensure mission effectiveness. The alignment process, known as boresighting, has historically been an expensive and time-consuming maintenance activity. The use of inertial measurement technology can eliminate the elaborate and time-consuming set up required by traditional boresighting technologies, and allow boresighting operations to be conducted in austere forward environments. The result is reduced down-time and enhanced system readiness. This paper explores the advantages of employing boresight equipment based on inertial measurement technology, and examines the techniques that enable system designers to make optimum use of this new technology.
