Microcomputers and computer graphics in transport planning and design

Some of the developments in microcomputers and computer graphics are reviewed especially in so far as they relate to the areas of transport planning and design. The basic characteristics of microcomputers and the fundamental techniques of computer graphics are described, and some of the applications of these techniques in transport planning and design reviewed. In particular, applications in the areas of transit planning, facility location, network generation, editing and analysis, mapping, public participation, highway design and simulation modelling are considered. The impact of these two technological developments on transport planning and design will be significant, and will open up new methodological horizons to the transport planner and researcher. (TRRL)
