Evaluation of Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Abroma Augusta Linn.

Abroma augusta is a small shrub belonging to the family Sterculiaceae. The plant was authenticated at Natural remedies. The dried and pulverized roots were subjected to continuous hot extraction with successive solvents viz; pet.ether, chloroform, ethanol, methanol and water using soxhlet assembly. The successive extracts were concentrated, dried and their percentage yields were recorded. Preliminary phytochemical screenings of all the above dried successive extracts were carried out. The anti-inflammatory activity of Abroma augusta was analyzed by in-vitro and in-vivo studies. In-vitro Anti-inflammatory activity was performed by Bovine serum albumin denaturation technique where, Diclofenac sodium was used as the standard which exhibited 84.56% at 100μg/ml, chloroform, ethanol and methanol extracts exhibited 19.82, 53.28 and 75.57% inhibition of protein denaturation at 400μg/ml concentration respectively. Petroleum ether and water extract did not show turbidity. The methanolic extract had showed significant activity; hence it was further subjected to In-vivo Anti-inflammatory studies by; Carrageenan induced rat paw edema and Cotton pellet granuloma model. In carrageenan induced rat paw edema model, the methanolic root extract of Abroma augusta at dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg has significantly reduced the rat paw edema as compared to positive control. In cotton pellet granuloma model, the implanted cotton pellet in positive control has shown increased wet and dry weight on 8 th day. Standard diclofenac sodium and methanolic extract at 400 mg/kg b.w has produced significant reduction in wet and dry weight of cotton pellets as compared to positive control.
