Abstract Lately, the wind loading on basic block-type buildings has been studied extensively, While the results of these investigations have led to new and more reliable codes the influence of some of the buildings' features usually encountered in practice such as balconies, parapets and root-superstructures have experienced little attention. This paper summarizes some important results of a comprehensive study into the effect of those “wall-roughness” on the wind pressures. Fluctuating wind loads and the pressure in the interior of partially open buildings have likewise been neglected in almost all winds loading codes and will be discussed in some detail.
