Serviceability Analysis of Memphis Water Delivery System

In this paper, Memphis water delivery system is introduced and its seismic performance is analyzed under various seismic conditions. Prior to the seismic analysis, a flow analysis of the intact system is performed, and its results is compared to the water head measured at several check points located in the real system. The calculated and measured values agree with each other verifying the analysis method. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is then used to perform the reliability analysis of the system under various seismic conditions where the functional serviceability of the system is defined either in terms of the connectivity or the total amount of available flow. The result clearly shows the way in which the functional serviceability decreases as the seismic intensity increases. However, it is also found that retrofitting some of the key facilities improves the seismic performance of the system. The results provide useful information for the improvement of the system against future earthquakes.
