Report on Dimacs * Workshop on Large-scale Internet Attacks

With the increasing size of the Internet, we have seen an increasing number of attacks that take advantage of the network's large scale. These kind of large-scale Internet attacks are usually difficult to counter because of the difficulties in tracing them back or deploying widespread defensive measures. This workshop explored four general types of large-scale attacks and the possible countermeasures: (1) Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), in which collections of hundreds or thousands of compromised machines are coordinated to simultaneously send floods of bogus traffic towards a target, completely overwhelming the target's resources, or those of the target's network;
