The Universidad Autonoma de Madrid is installing a 5 MV tandem ion accelerator in its Campus which will be dedicated to ion beam analysis of materials. The voltage generating system will be a Cockcroft-Walton type. This is the second installation of this kind in Spain after the 3 MV Van de Graaff tandem installed in Seville in 1998. In this paper we describe the characteristics of the machine, the accelerator hall, and the main lines of research foreseen in this accelerator laboratory. The tentative time schedule for the accelerator to be operative is estimated as fall 2001.
