Design of rational infection control policies for human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Note from Dr. Merle A. Sande-Wc have chosen the controversial area of infection control to begin this new section dedicated to short discussions on current topics of importance relevant to the rapidly expanding AIDS epidemic. What are the risks of spreading the AIDS virus in the nosocomial environment? What precautions are rational and can be supported by existing data? I have asked the principal investigators of the two largest and most comprehensive studies in which these issues have been examined, Dr. J. L. Gerberding and Dr. D. K. Henderson, to give their opinions and offer guidance to the infectious disease community.
